Before the floors go in, we write Scripture on the foundation. Pretty floors are nice, but blessed foundations are better.
In every one of our home projects, we try to write Scripture on the concrete foundation before the flooring goes in.
This tradition actually started with my mom. Over 30 years ago, when our church back in Minnesota was being built, we got to write Scripture on the foundation before the floors went in. I was just a young little lady back then and vaguely remember doing it. Little did I know, God was planting a tradition in my heart that He would carry forward for years to come.
Do I remember what Scripture I wrote?
Absolutely not.
But looking back, I don’t think that was the most important part. What mattered was the tradition being created and the seed that was planted.
Years later, that little tradition made its way into the home we built, and into many of the homes we’ve had the privilege of remodeling.
And now, what an incredible blessing to be able to carry it forward with my daughters.
There’s something pretty special about standing on a bare concrete slab with a sharpie in your hand, writing God’s Word where no one will see it for years…well, unless, of course, someone decides to remodel again.
And when they do… surprise!! You just found the blessing hiding under your hardwood.
Can you imagine?
They’re expecting to find concrete… and instead they find Scripture. Prayers. Blessings.
So before the flooring covers the foundation, we leave behind a little piece of God’s Word.
We believe a home is more than walls, windows, and pretty finishes. It’s where you raise your family, gather around the table, pray, make memories, laugh until you cry, and cry until you laugh.
It’s your sanctuary. Your castle. Your place of peace.
So yes, we care about the countertops. the flooring, the paint colors,
ALL the pretty things!
But we also care about what you can’t see.
The foundation.
Our hope and prayer in every home we touch is that we leave behind more than beautiful craftsmanship. We want to leave behind love, intentionality, and a blessing.
Because someday, long after the flooring has been replaced and the paint colors have changed, someone may pull up that floor and discover what was written underneath.
And they’ll know that before this house ever became someone’s home, it was prayed over.
So build the beautiful house.
Make it cozy. Make it gorgeous. Pick the pretty tile.
But most importantly.… make sure it’s built on the right foundation.
“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.” ~ Psalm 127:1
